How to Write an Abstract?

An abstract is a summary of your paper. It is made to help your reader understand what your research is about and decide whether it suits their interest.

An abstract is easy to write, because it is just a small summary of what you have already written.

  • Even if you already know what your work is going to be about, never write an abstract before the whole paper is ready. That is the only way the clearest and the most accurate summary can be performed.
  • An abstract is up to review the entire paper, including results and methods.
  • Consider the instructions your tutor give you. That means that you have to keep up with writing style requirements, the length, and the voice. The voice is defined by the type of the audience you are writing for. It can include the academics within your field or more wide audience.
  • Define the type of your abstract. Despite the fact that all the abstracts have the same goal, they could be composed in different styles: informative and descriptive. The informative one is typically used for long, scientific and technological researches, while descriptive style is more suitable for short papers.
  • Descriptive abstracts should express the methods and the goals of your research and typically are about 100-200 words. This style of writing an abstract does not require the results section.
  • The informative abstracts are much longer, since it gives a more detailed overview of your paper and includes the results. The length can vary from one paragraph to an entire page.
  • The information included in both styles of abstract are typically the same, however, the results section should be present in an informative one. The other difference is that the informative abstract is longer than a descriptive abstract.
